Emeli Sande - Heaven

Adele - Someone Like You

These two videos show similar characteristics. For example both videos show the main artist in a simple location and with simple colours and little narrative.
Neither videos contain voyeurism which Goodwin says is important for selling an artist, however this video sells the artist and is still visually captivating without objectifying women which makes Jake Nava a commendable director.
Both videos have the artist singing all the way through so the main focus is on them. This is apparent in other Jake Nava videos such as Britney Spears “If U Seek Amy” and Pink “Nobody Knows”.
The camera work is quite fluid and is hand held making it feel realistic making the audience feel close to the artist. There are a lot of close ups in the video in order to sell the artist and again to make the audience feel close to them.
The pace of the editing is quite slow making it feel quite intense and emotional.

Kanye West "Monster" again is quite intense and along with a lot of the videos does not include special effects.
The visuals of his videos match the lyrics for example in 'Shake You Off' and 'Milkshake'.

Applying Goodwins theory

Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics.
This music video demonstrates genre characteristics. The song is a pop song and the video shows this through the performance. Along with dance routine through out, there is an emphasis on narrative. The video is around 9 minutes, it is like a short film. Two large acts, Lady Gaga the artist and Beyonce both star in the video as girls in distress.

There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals.
The visuals amplify the lyrics in some ways and in others do not relate to the lyrics at all. For example she's talking about her 'telephone' and we see this amplified through the visuals through her costume. PICTURE.
However the video does not match the lyrics in the way that she is talking on the phone about how she is in a club 'It's my favourite song they're gonna play, and I cannot text with a drink in my hand..' The video is illustrating what is really happening that she seems to be covering up by saying that she is in a club.

There is a relationship between music and visuals
The music is very upbeat and dance-y, the visuals match this as there is a lot of dance through out the video. It is very fast paced and therefore the editing and camera movement is fast paced also.

The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur their work.
Lady Gaga is known for being larger than life or different to other artists, excentric. Therefore the fact that this video is almost like a short film shows her as an artist and establishes how she is different to others in the industry. Her excentic clothing or lack of clothing also promotes this.
There are many close ups of Lady Gaga and Beyonce in order to sell the artist.

There is frequent reference to notion of looking and particular voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
CCTV cameras are used  few times in the video. Also the fact that the women are behind bars there is notions of looking into their cell. Its not a place that they should not be which makes it feel like a place you should not be looking in on.
Camera angles are used to emphasise parts of the female body. Provocative clothing or very little clothing is used to attract the male gaze.

There is often intertextuality reference.
This video references a news programme and a cooking show, as demonstrated from the below pictures.

Meeting three

During todays meeting we started listing possible people to play the part of Mickey. From previous experience we wanted people who would stand out as looking like someone who would be in a band. Therefore they need to be out going and to some extent good looking.
We also decided on locations for the 'dates' in the video. We thought about the lake at hyde park with the couple on a pedalo. We also though about places for a picnic and also to ride a tandem.
We put all our ideas together to start a pitch.

Meeting two

In todays meeting we talked about narrative and performance in our music video. We were undecided on whether to have more than one main girl and boy. However we decided on one main girl and a few guys who would all play the idea of 'Mickey'. The idea behind this was that the main girl would be playing the guys off against one another and the video would show her out on dates with all of them. Along side this we would have a performance in which all characters would be in a band with the main girl as the lead singer.

After having lessons on intertextuality and voyeurism, we thought about how to incorporate this into our video as it is an important thing in music videos.

Voyeurism

 -->

Voyerism - The pleasure the audience gains from watching a person or people engaging in sexual activity or sexual behaviors.

Goodwin states that female performers are sexually objectified by camera work and editing with fragmented body shots emphasising a sexualised treatment of the performer.
It is usually a men’s controlling gaze towards women that has been sexually objectified.
Voyeurism is often used to help sell a product and create audience interest.
A majority of music videos now days use voyeurism to sell the star, one example is Eric Prydz ‘Call on me’.

In this music video the first shots are not of the woman's face but of her body in tight, revealing clothing.

Camera angles are also used to exaggerate and emphasise the female body.

This, along with the provocative dance moves and sexual gestures, captures a male gaze and therefore allows him to feel pleasure from it. It makes men feel that it is okay to watch because a man is in the video watching / leering at the women.

The camera is often on level with their groin area which gets a lot more camera time than their faces.

Also uses the notions of looking as there is mirrors around the room.

There is some focus on the female gaze as there is a guy in the room, although he is not dressed as provocatively as the females are. The low angle shot makes him look powerful in a room full of women.

This music video is post modern in that it parodies .....
Ultimately this is used to sell the artist and in turn sell the music.

Meeting one

In todays meeting we chose our groups. My group consists of myself, Madihah, Ana and Catherine. I am happy with my group as it is a mix of last years groups so I have seen what other members of the group are capable of doing and know that they will bring good ideas to the group that we can all elaborate on.
In todays meeting we started making a list of possible songs. (UPLOAD LIST)we were cautious not to choose one too slow or fast or that wasn't too well known. We thought around the idea of Eliza Doolittle as a group from the previous year used one of her songs and we felt it worked well. Eventually someone mentioned 'Hey Mickey'. After listening to the song we were all decided it was a good, fun song to make a music video to. I didn't think we would pick a song so fast but am happy with our choice.
We wanted to stay away from the cheerleading idea that came with the song and started brainstorming our own ideas. For me the 50's came to mind, polka dot dresses and diners. My group agreed and we started looking up costumes.
